Biography

I grew up in Port St Lucie and graduated from Lincoln Park Academy in 1996. From high school, I attended the University of Florida where I earned my Bachelors degree in Entomology and my Masters degree in Science Education. Straight from the University of Florida in 2002, I moved back to PSL and began work here at JCHS. I’ve been married since July of 2000 and in December of 2004 we were proud to announce the arrival of our first child, Wyatt Jak Dempsey. Our second child, a daughter, Irelynd (“Lyndy”) Ray Dempsey was born on August 28, 2006. I love being a mommy, but being a science teacher is pretty cool too ;)

Class Rules

Class Rules:
1. Students are to come to class prepared to learn (alert and with supplies - see supplies section)
2. Students are to show respect for the teacher, other students, and the surroundings
3. Clean up is essential before leaving the room
4. Sleeping or working on other subjects’ class work is unacceptable
5. Students are expected to do their BEST (honestly)

Grading

Grading System:

1. Grading is on a nine week marking period.
2. Semester exams are mandatory for all classes.
3. Semester exams are worth 20% of the semester grade.
4. Grades and their percent values are as follows:

A 90-100
B 80-89
C 70-79
D 60-69
F 59 or below

5. Deficiency reports will be sent for all mid-quarter grades 74% or below.
6. I grade on a total points system. There will be two to three large tests each nine weeks. These tests will be approximately 50 points each. There will be a quiz every three to five days; they will be approximately 10 points each. Homework will be assigned at least three days a week; but more often than not there will be a HW assignment every day; these assignments are worth approximately 5 points each. Labs and “special activities” will take place AT LEAST once a week; they are worth 15 points each. Participation, a separate grade, for the entire nine weeks is worth 50 points. At least once a quarter, projects will be assigned; they are worth between 15 to 100 points depending on the effort required for the project. Total points for the nine weeks usually average right around 500.
7. Homework assignments not turned in on the designated due date will be due the next day and the assignment will be deducted half credit. If the homework is not turned in during class time on the day it is due, it is considered late even if it is turned in on the same day.
8. If a student is absent on the day a project is due, the project is STILL due on the assigned day during the student’s class period or it is late.
9. Assignments with no name will be deducted 5 points.

Assignments

Assignments are given daily in class and stored in the "make-up" folder. Any questions about assignments or if advanced assignments are needed due to planned absences, see Mrs. Dempsey directly or email her at dempsey@johncarrollhigh.com
